Run and Chew Gum at the Same Time?

This week my running has been pathetic at best. I was supposed to begin training for a half marathon Jan. 3. I was sick that week, so then it became Jan. 10. It snowed this week and my treadmill at home (which had been working for 2 weeks) had issues again so I’ve logged 3 miles this week and that’s it.

Tonight, I will be making my first return trip to the work gym after my last oh-so-pleasant experience. Hopefully more people are interested in happy hour than workout hour since it’s a Friday night. I’m also going to try something new today while running. There is a woman at the gym who runs for hours on the treadmill (no idea how she both mentally and physically does that) and I always notice she has a pack of gum with her. Then I read on KIMpossible’s blog that she uses gum as a thirst-quencher and as a way to control her breathing. So tonight, my pack of Trident and I will give this a whirl. Hopefully, I don't choke.

  1. I run chewing gum too.
I don't know about the thirst-quenching part though. It just never crossed my mind.
However, I realized that if I don't chew gum, my jaw/gums get a rather dull, numbing feeling.
Try it and let us know what you think.

  2. Yay - another one to the "dark side"! Don't follow my lead on the thirst quenching part - I've been told "Bad Kim!" many times for that one - by people and by my body, BUT it does help for the short runs! Oh and yeah - I have no clue how that chickadee can run for hours on the treadmill either - sheesh! I have done 14 miles on the elliptical though, but that was when I first got injured and didn't know what was wrong yet. Good luck at the gym tonight!!! Let me know how you like the gum-chewing!

  3. The gum chewing experiment was kinda nice! It definitely helps on the short runs. I did notice that toward the end of the run I was going to town on that piece of gum, so hopefully no one really noticed I was chewing like a cow at that point!
